TOOLS NAMES AND THEIR SHORTCUTS

 



1. Selection Tool (V)

  • Pointer Appearance: Black arrow.

  • Function: Selects entire objects or groups. When hovering over anchor points or edges, the pointer may change to show you can drag/move.

  • Context Behavior: If you click on a grouped object, the whole group is selected.

2. Direct Selection Tool (A)

  • Pointer Appearance: White arrow.

  • Function: Selects individual anchor points or path segments.

  • Context Behavior: Cursor changes slightly when over an anchor point to indicate selection.

3. Group Selection Tool

  • Pointer Appearance: White arrow with a plus (+).

  • Function: Selects objects and groups step-by-step—individual, then group, then larger group.


✍️ Drawing Tools

4. Pen Tool (P)

  • Pointer Appearance: Pen nib.

  • Function: Places anchor points to create paths.

  • Context Behavior:

    • When hovering over a path: a minus or plus appears for removing/adding anchor points.

    • Hover over an anchor: shows a small circle to close the path.

5. Curvature Tool (Shift + ~)

  • Pointer Appearance: A curved pen icon.

  • Function: Places smooth anchor points and adjusts curves more intuitively than the Pen Tool.


✒️ Type Tools

6. Type Tool (T)

  • Pointer Appearance: I-beam (text cursor).

  • Function: Click to start typing on art board or drag to create a type box.

  • Context Behavior:

    • Hover over a path or shape: pointer changes to indicate type-on-a-path or area type.


🔺 Shape Tools (Rectangle, Ellipse, etc.)

  • Pointer Appearance: Crosshair.

  • Function: Click and drag to draw the shape.

  • Context Behavior:

    • Holding Shift: constrains proportions (e.g., perfect circle or square).

    • Pointer stays as a crosshair until shape is complete.


🖌️ Brush & Pencil Tools

7. Paintbrush Tool (B)

  • Pointer Appearance: Paintbrush icon.

  • Function: Draws free form paths with brush strokes.

  • Context Behavior: Cursor might preview brush size and shape if pressure-sensitive tablet is used.

8. Pencil Tool (N)

  • Pointer Appearance: Pencil icon.

  • Function: Draws free form paths.

  • Context Behavior: When over an existing path, it shows a small icon indicating you're editing a path.


🧰 Other Notable Tools

9. Eyedropper Tool (I)

  • Pointer Appearance: Eyedropper icon.

  • Function: Picks up and applies appearance (color, stroke, etc.)

  • Context Behavior: Pointer shows small filled square to indicate applied style.

10. Gradient Tool (G)

  • Pointer Appearance: Gradient bar or tool icon.

  • Function: Adjusts gradient direction and length.

  • Context Behavior: Pointer changes when over editable gradient points.

11. Zoom Tool (Z)

  • Pointer Appearance: Magnifying glass.

  • Function: Click to zoom in, Alt/Option-click to zoom out.

  • Context Behavior: Shows plus or minus inside magnifier depending on zoom direction.


🧭 Cursor Tips

  • Illustrator shows contextual icons next to your pointer: plus, minus, slash, circle, anchor, etc. These tell you what action you're about to perform.

  • Holding modifier keys like Shift, Alt, or Command/Control often changes the pointer behavior (e.g., constraining shapes, duplicating objects, or rotating from center).
